Sustainability Directors

Making sustainability workable across the functions that need to act.

Progress depends on decisions made elsewhere

Sustainability Directors often know what needs to happen. The difficulty is that much of it depends on decisions, budgets and processes they do not own. Procurement, finance, risk, legal, operations and senior management each bring their own responsibilities, priorities and constraints.

Bluespar’s perspective is shaped by more than 25 years in international business, including shipping, sales, procurement and supply-chain management, followed by senior responsibility for sustainability strategy and implementation in a large industrial company. That experience spans family-owned businesses and large corporate environments.

It is experience from both sides of the fence: from the sustainability function setting direction and from the business functions being asked to act. In a large organisation, the strength of the sustainability case is only part of what determines progress. Internal stakeholder management, governance, timing and clear functional ownership matter just as much.

We help Sustainability Directors translate sustainability priorities into decisions, responsibilities and processes that other functions can work with, while retaining the substance of the underlying impacts, obligations and objectives.

The sustainability team retains direction and subject-matter leadership, while responsibility for implementation is built into the functions that control the relevant decisions.
